An earache, also known as otalgia, is characterized by sharp, dull, or burning pain in one or both ears. Otalgia is often classified based on the origin of the pain causing the earache. Primary otalgia describes ear pain originating inside the ear, while referred otalgia describes ear pain originating outside the ear.
